In 1991, the Federal Highway Administration established the National Scenic Byways Program. This significant initiative aimed to recognize highways for their unique qualities and, importantly, to promote tourism and stimulate economic development.
National Scenic Byways must meet one of the six intrinsic qualities: scenic, natural, historic, cultural, archeological, and recreational.
These highways vary in length from the 3.4-mile Las Vegas Boulevard National Scenic Byway to the 2,069-mile Great River Road. National Scenic Byways are excellent road trip routes because of the history, culture, and recreation available along the routes.
