Midwest

Explore the Midwest region early American frontier settlements and laid-back cities in the central plains.

The Midwest, a vast and diverse region, spans several states across the upper central part of the United States. The area, which is larger than many European countries, includes Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

The region lies across the central plains between the Appalachian Mountains and Rocky Mountains, a defining characteristic of the “Bread Basket.” The mighty Mississippi River begins in the Midwest, dissecting the region along its winding path and connecting with the Ohio River and Missouri River.

Popular travel destinations include Chicago, Columbus, Indianapolis, Kansas City, St. Louis, Minneapolis, and Cincinnati. The Great Lakes are one of the most-visited areas in the Midwest.

The Midwest is one of the best road trip destinations in the country.
